How can obesity affect women's health?
Carrying additional weight has
detrimental effects on one's health, including type 2 diabetes, musculoskeletal
conditions like osteoarthritis, several malignancies, and cardiovascular
disease (primarily heart disease and stroke) (endometrial, breast and colon).
These ailments lead to early mortality and severe disability.
Women's health is adversely
affected by obesity in many different ways. The relative risk of diabetes and
coronary artery disease in women is higher when they are overweight or obese.
Osteoarthritis of the knee and low back are more common in obese women. Both
fertility and contraception are significantly impacted by obesity. Anovulation
and menstrual disorders are more common in obese women. Women who are
overweight or obese run an increased chance of having children. These women are
at higher risk for subfecundity, infertility, conception rates, miscarriage
rates, and pregnancy problems.
Both men and women who are
overweight or obese are more likely to die from any cause, and the risk of
death increases with weight. To stop the twin epidemics
of obesity and diabetes, policy, the physical and social environment, and
cultural norms must all be changed in addition to individual dietary and
lifestyle choices.
